Frequently asked questions.

What happens in spiritual direction?

During a session, a spiritual director is likely to invite you into a quiet and reflective space, ask lots of open-ended questions, and follow up on things that sound important. These nonjudgemental comments and questions help you pay attention to moments that feel grace-filled or like nudges from the Spirit. Sometimes people cuss and express doubts, which is as much a part of keeping it real as talking about the things that delight us. Primarily, these honest conversations focus on your deepening relationship with God and exploring what that relationship means for your calling.

How often do we meet?

Most often people meet monthly for about an hour (in-person or online). Alternatively, they might meet daily or weekly during a period of retreat or intentional discernment.

I prefer in-person / online. What’s your take?

I am open to meeting with people in whatever way helps us come together. A handful of years ago, most folks were coming in person. Today, well over half come by Zoom. Whatever the means of connection, I trust the Spirit to show up every single time. Because I value the embodied dimensions of our Christian faith and soulful relationships, I have reserved the first and third Tuesdays to be available for in-person meetings at St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church (Roseville, MN) and have more regular openings when meeting online. Additionally, I am available for in-person meetings at River Place Woodland Retreat (Preston, MN) some Fridays. Assuming our schedules align well, I’m equally glad to meet in either mode.

How much does it cost and how do I pay?

The recommended contribution for spiritual direction is $85 per session. I encourage people to determine an amount that is both meaningful to them and sustainable given their circumstance. That is to say that I want you to find a contribution that allows you to come regularly, without wondering if it would be better financially to skip a month. After a session, I’ll email you a link to use for payment in a form you choose. I’ll also include a link to scheduling online if we hadn’t already picked our next time.

How do I see if a spiritual director is a good fit for me?

You’re on the right track already. Something stirred in you to the point of searching, maybe even reaching out. I respect that the Spirit is at work in this process of finding a good fit. After exploring a bit and getting a feel for my approach, I invite you to schedule a free initial consultation. We can meet together to explore your interest in spiritual direction and to answer any questions you might have. If it seems a mutually good fit, we’ll might continue meeting together. Otherwise, I can draw from what we learn together to recommend someone else. Wherever you begin, plan to meet three times and re-evaluate. That gives you and the director a chance to find your rhythm and adjust together or recommend someone who is an even better fit.
